OpenRouter alternative: evaluate InferGate
Compare InferGate with an existing OpenRouter integration using endpoint configuration, exact model access, prepaid costs and workload testing.
If you are evaluating an alternative to OpenRouter, start with the models and API behavior your application needs. InferGate currently publishes four model identifiers, rather than promising every model in another provider's catalog.
Migration checklist
- Inventory the exact endpoints, tools and parameters your application sends.
- Match requirements against the four published InferGate models.
- Create an InferGate key and configure a separate client for testing.
- Compare completed output quality, observed latency and actual charges on the same workload.
- Migrate gradually with an explicit rollback to your previous client configuration.
Configuration comparison
| Dimension | InferGate | Existing provider |
|---|---|---|
| SDK base URL | https://api.useinfergate.com/v1 | Use its documented endpoint |
| Credentials | InferGate account key | Separate provider key |
| Models | Four current exact IDs | Verify its current catalog |
| Cost | Check live application rates | Check current provider rates |
Consult OpenRouter documentation for its current setup. No price, reliability or performance advantage is asserted without a comparable test.
Prepaid usage and costs
API usage consumes available account credit. Review current input and output rates in application pricing before running a workload. This page does not promise free requests or a fixed discount. See how prepaid pricing works and compare actual usage logs after a small test.
An acceptance test before migration
| Test | Record | Migration gate |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP connection | The server accepted the connection | Does not prove useful output |
| Response status | completed | Failed or incomplete responses need handling |
| Output | Non-empty task-relevant text | Token counts alone do not score quality |
| Model identity | Matches the requested ID | Do not relabel a response from another model |
Runnable integration example
curl --fail-with-body https://api.useinfergate.com/v1/responses \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $INFERGATE_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"model":"gpt-5.5","input":"Return a short release note for an API client update.","max_output_tokens":256}'Frequently asked questions
Is InferGate a drop-in replacement for every OpenRouter workload?
No such claim is made. Compare the actual models, endpoints, parameters and streaming events your application uses. Start with a separate test client before switching production traffic.
Which service is cheaper?
A useful comparison needs current rates and the same successful workload. Include output lengths, account multipliers and documented billing components. This page does not assert a price advantage.
Can I reuse my provider API key?
No. Create an InferGate key and configure the InferGate base URL. Keep your original provider setup available until the migration acceptance tests pass.
How should I test streaming during migration?
Check first text, useful output, completion and cancellation for each provider separately. A partial stream is not equivalent to a completed answer.
